The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
