The World Are Welcome to Join as the Fourth Haim Sister.
"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."
However, there remains a single issue: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple celebrated admirers have publicly petitioned for the role.
One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.
In the tradition of the best bands, they're a close trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."
"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to form a group."
"So everyone are welcome to be the next Haim sister."
Historic Recognition
The trio are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.
They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the prize.
"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"
The importance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.
"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that came before us."
Emotional Upheaval and Humour
The project came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.
The themes track departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.
"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."
Development of Style
That developed confidence called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.
"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."
Experiences and Collective Humor
The trio's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.
One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.
"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."
A Secure Future
One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.
They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.
But the band will consistently be their number one commitment.
"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
